Kinesiology tape has been used since the 1970s in human medicine for both rehabilitation and enhanced performance. While traditional sports tape is applied to stabilize by restricting mobility, kinesiology tape is elastic, allowing the body part to move freely while still receiving support. Depending on how the tape is applied—such as the direction and degree of stretch—it can influence the tissues beneath the tape. Kinesiology tape can be applied to:
- Increase or inhibit muscle activity
- Support joints, tendons, or ligaments
- Improve microcirculation
- Correct posture
- Relieve stress at muscle attachments
- Facilitate fascia release
- Enhance proprioception (body awareness)
Available in light blue and purple (note: tape color does not affect performance).
Please note that kinesiology tape is a physiotherapeutic tool and should primarily be applied by individuals with adequate knowledge of anatomy, taping techniques, and clinical reasoning. Horse owners can use the tape as well, but it is strongly recommended that the horse first be taped by a veterinarian or therapist, and that the owner receives guidance on how to apply it correctly.
The interaction between fur and the tape’s adhesive can vary greatly, meaning adhesion time cannot be guaranteed. On some horses, the tape may hold for a few hours, while on others it can stay in place for weeks. Application technique and placement are key factors for durability. Always ensure the horse is clean and dry and that the adhesive is properly heat activated. If adhesion remains a problem, a light application of Tensospray before taping may improve durability.
